Subbed in a 12-board ACBL sanctioned IMP pairs tournament with a decent enough partner.  My friend and mentor, Peter Clark, was in another section and while I scored up a couple more IMPs than he did, he finished 3rd in his section and I was 5th in mine.

Neither one of us did very well on this board.

All red, 1st.

Ugh.  To open or not to open.  A good case can be made either way.

I passed.  Peter opened.

At my table, pard opened 1 Diamond, I bid 1 Heart, pard bid 2 Clubs and I bid 3 Diamonds (4th suit forcing by a passed hand opposite a regular partner is sketchy enough, but opposite a pickup partner I didn't seriously consider it.)  Now partner bid 3 Spades.  Ugh.  I hope he's not some pooch showing me a Spade stopper.  After a few seconds of agony I decided to trust him and bid 4 Diamonds.

Maybe I should have bid 5?

4 Diamonds was the contract at our table.

At Peter's table, he opened 1 Heart and raised his partner's 2 Diamond bid to 3.  Over 3 Spades Peter retreated to 4 Diamonds and his partner bid 6.

I think we needed to switch partners.

Hearts were 4-3 and so 11 tricks wrapped.
