Here's a hand from a tournament I subbed in tonight.

All red, third

QJ2 / 65 / AKJ7 / AJ72

Pard opens 1 Spade, Double on my right.

If pard can whip 2 Hearts, I'm happy to sit, and I'll whip the minors.  I'm not crazy about doing this with 3 nice pieces, but they could easily be going for 4 digits.  I redoubled.

This was passed around to RHO, who bid 2 Hearts.

Meh.  Did I mention that I was subbing?  I don't really want to defend 2 undoubled Hearts.  I don't really want to play 3 Hearts either, but 4 Spades sounds too final and I'm still not completely willing to rule out slam.  3 Hearts it is.

Pard bid 3 Spades and I raised to 4.

When I saw declarer's hand I knew we hadn't bid enough.  The doubler led the 5 of Diamonds.

QJ2 / 65 / AKJ7 / AJ72

AKT865 / K7 / 43 / Q53

Slam looks pretty gross, but on the auction, it's significantly better than 50%.  You essentially need the doubler to have at least 10 HCP including the Queen of Diamonds.  That's not too much to ask for a red takeout double by an unpassed hand, is it?

There are many similar roads to Rome on this hand, but the line I'd take would be to win the Diamond, cash 2 trumps ending in hand, hook the Diamond, cash the other high Diamond, pitching a Heart, and play all your trumps.

With one trump to go (after 5 Spades and 3 Diamonds have been cashed):

- / - / 7 / AJ72

5 / K / - / Q53

Doubler has the Ace of Hearts, King third of Clubs, and one other card.

Obviously he can't unload the Ace of Hearts.  If he pitches a Club, a finesse will net you 3 fast tricks in that suit.  If he pitches the other card, you throw him in with the Ace of Hearts to endplay him in Clubs for the same 3 Club tricks.

Simple, elegant hand.  Unfortunately we didn't bid it and partner played to guarantee her contract (if both minor cards are offside (albeit incredibly unlikely) and you take the Diamond hook you won't make 4), holding herself to 10 tricks.

+620 was worth less than an IMP (the one pair in slam went down on a slightly different auction: 2 Heart overcall and tricky 9 of Diamonds lead.)

Doubler:

4 / AQJ32 / Q985 / KT8 (I like 2 Hearts better myself, but I know Jeff would double.  Obviously if the 5 bagger were in the minors, it would be an auto double.)
