Rematch

Reading about GIB tournaments is probably even more boring than blogging them, so I'll stick to humans after this one (unless there's a truly amazing hand that's too good to be true.)
Tonight was the night for my rematch in the money bridge format tournament on BBO. I didn't quite get all 3570 back, but +3180 after 7 boards was good enough for 1st place (2nd place was +1360 in a 15 player field) and I sat on board 8 (I was slated for a white down 3 when pard reopened and I had a 1 count and no fit) until the time ran out.
GIB bid an uncontested 5 Hearts twice in our 7 board set. Once with
Q9 / KJT8753 / 4 / T65
after I opened 2NT and superaccepted a 3 Diamond transfer.
This was our biggest pickup of the set when my LHO didn't lead a Club from
763 / 42 / T9652 / K84
and my 2 top Club losers went away. +1460
The other 5 Hearts I opened 1 Spade, GIB bid 1NT, GIB's LHO bid 3 Diamonds and I bid 3 Hearts.
A6 / A97642 / 87 / 654
I guess it's not awful, just really aggressive. Luckily this was board 7 and I already was sitting on a fat plus position and didn't want to jeopardize it so passed with:
KQJ97 / KQ53 / JT / AK
Can I have more for 3 Hearts? Maybe GIB was asking about a Diamond control, but somehow I doubt it.
I also played in another quick Individual tonight. It was all over on the first board:
I randomly drew somebody called 'Yahoo Bob' (the names have been changed to protect the innocent, but the 'Yahoo' part is correct.) All white, 4th: Lefty opened 1 Club. Yahoo bid 1 Spade. Righty passed.
A / T732 / AQJ8654 / K
It's a nice hand, but the King of Clubs is probably not worth much. 2 Diamonds is a slight underbid but anything else seems misdirected and if I get another chance I should be able to describe the hand pretty well.
I got another chance alright.
Lefty bid 3 Clubs and Righty came to life and bid 5 Clubs.
This guy or
this guy?
I chose door#1 and smashed it. Yes, they could have 11 top tricks in the round suits, but in a short tournament you've got to go for a top on every board. I think I'd smash it anyway, but in a short tournament it's mandatory.
Pard led a Diamond and dummy tracked:
QT9853 / A954 / - / 754 Dummy (RHO)
A / T732 / AQJ8654 / K
Declarer pitched a Spade from Dummy and I won my Ace and attempted the fearsome 'Grandma defense' by cashing my Ace of Spades (trying to, anyway.) It didn't cash. Declarer ruffed. Ruffed a Diamond. Drew a round of trumps. Tried to ruff another Diamond and pard ruffed in with the 8. Played the Queen of Hearts, covered, and hooked me out of my Ten on the way back. Easy game. +550. Nothing we could do. The good news is that my double didn't cost a single matchpoint. The bad news is that -400 and -550 would both have been worth 1/6th of the matchpoints (someone went for sticks and wheels our way.)
QT9853 / A954 / - / 754
- / QJ8 / K972 / AQJ932
Pard had more of a 2 Spade bid than a 1 Spade bid (although these days a lot of people are bidding 1 Spade with 2 Spade bids and 2 Spades with 1 Spade bids.)
KJ7642 / K6 / T3 / T86
