Here's my favorite hand from a 20 board set with Jeff tonight:

All red you pick up:

96543 / 754 / 93 / K85

Pard opens 2 Clubs, you bid 2 Diamonds (maybe 2 Hearts negative is better) and pard bids 2NT.

What now?

Well, the textbook answer is 3 Hearts (transfer) followed by 3NT.  But playing in a 5-3 fit with the 5 card suit headed by the 9 is almost never going to take 2 more tricks than NT and often won't take any more tricks than NT.

I figured that if pard had 4 Spades, we'd play there.  Otherwise, 3NT seems like the best hope of making game.  I bid Stayman and Jeff bid 3 Spades.  OK, he talked me into it.  4 Spades it is.

But now's when the dark horse entered the race.  4 Spades was passed around to my LHO, who smashed it.

As I've said before, my rule is generally only to redouble white (and then only if I'm highly confident that we're at worst down 1) unless I'm sure of a make.  But I made an exception in this case.  It just felt right with a King, a 9 card fit, and cards that sound like they're in the slot to send this back.

Jeff's hand was not a disappointment

96543 / 754 / 93 / K85

AQJT / AK9 / AQ / QJ72

I had been mildly concerned that he had a 21 count with 2 tens (he tends to upgrade 2 tens, I only upgrade 3) but he had the full meal deal, a fat 23 count with great trumps.

His LHO led the 4 of Clubs to Righty's Ace and a Heart came back.  When his Ace of Hearts won, he banged down the AQ of Spades (3-1 offside) and when a Diamond came back, he claimed making 5.  +1480, scoring almost that many hundredths of IMPs (14.60 IMPs.)

My LHO had made a reasonable (highly aggressive, but sane) spec double against the wrong pair:

7 / JT2 / KJ65 / AT963

He 'knew' that Spades were 4-1 and hoped for a little something from partner, not expecting to lose more than 170 points (620 vs 790) if he was wrong.

He then made a helpful suggestion to me: 'u should give transfer '

'how do I go +1480 if I give transfer?'
