Slam on Every Hand

Just finished a half set with Jeff.  It's nice to run lucky.  Here's a hand that worked out well, after slams on each of the 2 previous hands:

You pick up in 3rd at unfavorable:

AKT652 / - / Q82 / J973

Partner opens 1 Diamond, Righty bids 2 Hearts, you bid 2 Spades, Lefty bids 4 Hearts, Pard bids 4 Spades pass to you.

Is it a 30 point deck?  If pard has a minimum with wastage in Hearts, your slam chances are almost nil.  But you sure don't need much if he has a few rags in Hearts and stuff everywhere else.

I considered passing.  I considered bidding 5 Hearts.  But I ended up bidding 6 Spades.  I always like to get as many horses in the race as I can and this bid gave me 2 extra dark horses: 1. Maybe they'll dive in 7 Hearts at this vulnerability. 2. Maybe we're off the AK of Clubs but we have enough pitches to make it on a top Heart lead (if pard has Qxx Kxx AKxxx xx, for instance.)

6 Spades bought the contract.  Lefty led the Ace of Clubs (Doh!) and I bought ok, but still needed some luck:

J93 / 75 / AKJ43 / KT4

AKT652 / - / Q82 / J973

Spades were 2-2 (Qx offside, so taking a strange view would have been costly) and I soon wrapped up 12 tricks.

+1430 was worth almost 15 IMPs (the only other pair in slam went down on the Club misguess with silent opps.)

Happy Canada Day!
