Finally Jeff and Scooter on Vugraph. First, they took away an IMP from Thurston, maybe that contested claim. Score at the beginning of the set is 60-49. I watched boards 9-16 first (hence the lack of immediate comparisons, but I'll list them in numerical order here.)
Board 1 Waldemar and Piotr did well to stop in 2 Hearts, just in. Here, the auction was 2NT. (Uncontested 1 Diamond, 1 Heart, 1 NT, 2NT) Scooter could have been a hero by leading a Diamond into the 1 Diamond opener from KT9xx, but he tried an unbid Spade from QTx and declarer was home. Lead was pretty normal, I think. Jeff had QJx of diamonds, ugh.
Lose 2.
Board 2 was a normal flat 4 Spades, just in.
Push
Board 3 was a thin 4 Spades that needed a Diamond lead (or the Ace of Hearts and a Diamond switch) to beat it against perfect declarer play (declarer also has to take a position when playing trumps.) Unfortunately Scooter guessed to lead a Club and declarer drew an intelligent inference from the auction when tackling trumps and made him pay. +650
Lose 13
Board 4 N/S went gently at both tables, selling to 2 Diamonds instead of competing with an 8 card heart fit and half the deck. +130
Push
Board 5 Scooter played in his 6-2 Club fit and made 130. Colbert played in his 4-4 Spade fit and made 110.
Win 1
Board 6 Jeff got doubled in 5 Hearts, white vs red, knowing he was a favorite to make. I would have sent it back in a heartbeat. +650 (Technically the opps have a successful 'save' in 6 Diamonds on their 10 card fit, good luck finding that at these colors.) To Jeff's credit, he claimed at trick 3 while the Vugraph commentators were still trying to figure out how to make the hand by not drawing trumps.
Win 5
Board 7 was a push in 1NT with 21 high on different defenses with identical results. -50
Push
Board 8 should have been a push in 2 Spades down 1. Waldemar and Piotr found the nice defense (involving killing dummy's heart winner with a ruff so that declarer can't use it for a pitch.) Thurston and Delogu didn't.
Win 4
Board 9 Scooter passed a technically forcing bid to miss a decent white game. Still, 5 Diamonds in a 9 card fit on 21 high probably won't be easy for the other table to get to. +130 Plus position for Thurston
Push
Board 10 Scooter opened 3 Spades and Jeff bid 3N on A43 / AQT2 / K5 / Q93. Jeff played sloppy once he had 9 safe tricks. +600 Small plus position for Thurston
Win 3 (Waldemar and Piotr took an unanticipated dive in 5 Diamonds for -500)
Board 11, played immediately after Board 12, was all Scooter. He had J4 / J543 / AKQ3 / AJT and opened 1NT, heard 2 Diamond DONT on his left, Jeff bid 2 Spades, Righty bid 4 Hearts and he passed. Then he led the Ace of Diamonds and had a look at dummy.
NOT!
Righty bid 4 Hearts and he smashed it. Then he led a trump. Then he kept leading trumps. Then he wrote +500 on his card. Then he picked up the next hand. C-L-U-T-C-H Big plus position for Frukacz.
Win 12
Board 12 was a normal 4 Spades by Thurston that the boys defended well (nothing spectacular) for down 2 on a couple of ruffs. -100 Small plus position for Frukacz
Win 11 (Colbert didn't want to give Balcombe his ruff, +420.)
Board 13 was a pretty normal, if tight, 3 Heart contract by Delogu. +140 Small plus position for Thurston
Lose 6
(Waldemar decided to sell out at the 2 level to 2 Spades with a known 9 card fit because he was 4-3-3-3)
Board 14 was a thin 3N by Thurston that is on a 2 way guess for a Queen. Unfortunately Scooter popped when declarer led the Jack towards the AT8 in dummy and there was no more guess. +400 Big plus position for Thurston
Lose 10 (Waldemar didn't play the Jack, but Colbert probably gets it right anyway.)
Board 15 was a thin 3N that requires a difficult duck at trick 1 (when the defense found the best lead, which isn't obvious) or a later misdefense. Jeff didn't find the duck at trick 1 (I doubt I would have, either) but the defense slipped and he was home. +600 Small plus position for Frukacz (probably a push, but if not, then a big win.)
Push
Board 16 was a thin 4 Spades by Delogu that required the defender who made the takeout double to not have a key ace. He didn't have it. +620 is a plus position for Thurston (again, probably a push, but if not, then a big win.)
Push
A closely contested set ended in favor of Frukacz, 36-31 which brings the match total to 96-80 also in favor of Frukacz.
I went and worked out between sets so I'll try to catch up now.
Board 17 was a normal 4 Spades on a 4-4 fit with 26 high. Chatagnier took one more trick than Nick, 11.
Win 1
Board 18 Waldemar and Piotr got to 1NT with 11 opposite 10 on a hand most tables would pass out (which happened in the other room.) +90
Win 3
Board 19 Different declarers and leads led to a one trick difference in a normal 4 Hearts contract (26 high, 9 card fit.)
Lose 1
Board 20 Rene and Judy were both in 2 Hearts and both took an odd number of tricks. Rene made the contract. Judy lost her way (was cold if trumps 3-2, which they were.)
Win 6
Board 21 Both E/W preferred playing in 2 of a minor in their 7 card fit to playing in 1NT without a spade stopper after the opponents tried to buy it for 1 Spade and they competed with 20 high between them. They both took the same number of tricks (6) they would have taken in NT.
Push
Board 22 Chatagnier and Pelletier were in a horrible 6NT (on 30 high with no fit) that made on a favorable lead (and a finesse and a 4-3 break.) Judy was in a pretty normal 3NT and made 5.
Win 11
Board 23 Chatagnier and Pelletier played in their 7-1 Heart fit instead of their 5-4 Spade fit and at the 2 level instead of in game. They made one more trick than their counterparts at the other table, that's good, right? Uh, not when they took 10 tricks and bid game.
Lose 9
Board 24 Flat and normal 3NT making 4 on 26 high.
Push
Board 25 Piotr heard 1 Diamond on his right, bid 1 Spade on KJ9632 / J75 / A2 / Q4, 3 Diamonds on his left, 3 Spades from partner, pass to him. He raised himself to 4, much to the scorn of Vugraph commentators. In spite of a seemingly favorable lead there was no chance. Plus position for Thurston.
Lose 6 (-140, identical auction up until the final decision)
Board 26 Piotr navigated a tricky, but cold, 4 Hearts with 11 opposite 11 in an 8 card fit. Plus position for Frukacz.
Win 3 (-500 in their 10 card Spade fit at other table)
Board 27 Nick navigated a not tricky, and cold, 4 Spades with 13 opposite 10 in a 10 card fit. Small plus position for Thurston.
Push
Board 28 Waldemar and Piotr bid a horrible slam that had less than no play with lots of controls and not enough points (12 opposite 11, 9 card fit.) Would normally be a big plus position for Thurston, but it's hard to make 4 on the hand (result was -150.) Plus position for Thurston. I think I'll blog this hand later.
Lose 12 (Colbert didn't get the toughest lead and played it well, -450.)
Board 29 Nick and Judy bid to 5 Diamonds on a hook. The hook was off. -100 Normally they'd have been pushed there anyway since Waldemar and Piotr had an 11 card heart fit (makes 4 Hearts, not 5.) Plus position for Frukacz.
Push
Board 30 Waldemar got a favorable lead in 1NT on 18 high and scrambled for one more trick than they scored at the other table where it was played from the other side. -50
Win 2
Board 31 Waldemar and Piotr stole the contract for 3 Spades (-100) with 15 high and an 8 card fit. If you hold 2 / KT6 / AQT98 / QJT9 are you ever going to sell out red at IMPs to the opponents in 3 Spades when your partner opened a 11-13 1NT? I never would. Nick did.
Win 11 (5 Diamonds wrapped at the other table for +600)
Board 32 was a cold and reasonably easily biddable 4 Spades that wrapped at both tables.
Push
Segment result 37-28 Frukacz Overall Score 133-108 Frukacz
David tells me they're up by 26, so I must have dropped an IMP somewhere.
