Continuing the nightmare set ...

You pick up all red in 4th:

AKJ5 / KQ5 / J875 / J6

3 passes to you.

I decided to downgrade the hand and open 1 Diamond.  I almost never downgrade, but I had no spots, doubleton jack, 3 jacks, really it's an ugly hand.  And since we're down in the match, a mildly swingy action is worth considering.

Jeff bid 1 Heart, I bid 1NT (we play Walsh style,) Jeff invited with 2NT and I bid 3NT.  The 6 of hearts hit the table.

Dummy tracked:

964 / AJ84 / AQ4 / T52

Too bad Jeff didn't downgrade too, we'd have found the magic 1NT with 26 high.  We're wide open in clubs with only 7 top tricks.  I cashed some hearts, a high spade, went to the board in hearts to take the spade finesse and the queen popped.  I cashed the jack just to make sure it wasn't a clever falsecard from qtx and then took the diamond finesse, losing and ended down 2.

Our opps were in 3 Hearts at the other table (our teammates opened 1 Club in third seat, which kept our opps out of 3NT.)  Another 9 IMPs away.

Sigh.
