So same set, I pick up in 3rd, favorable:
J / QJ754 / Q64 / KQ32
I open 1 Heart, 1 Spade on my left, Pass, 2 Spades, Pass, Pass, 2NT
So what the heck is 2NT?
a) Partner forgot to bid 1NT
or
b) Partner forgot to make a negative double
Righty doubles (wonderful) and I decide that b) is more likely and bid 3 Clubs.
Waldemar doubles instantly and visions of sticks and wheels flash through my head.
Pierre-Yves passes and Piotr answers my prayers and pulls to 3 Spades.
Waldemar, in a typical Polish maneuver (unfortunately successful more often than not, at least in my experience) now raises to 4, and pard smashes it.
The 3 of hearts is led and dummy tracks:
T642 / K2 / AT95 / T85
Waldemar wins the King, plays Ace King of spades and a third spade to pard's Queen. The club 4 is led to your queen, winning, now what?
Okay, technically I didn't blow the hand, but I wasn't
present in the hand and that's just as bad. It NEVER occurred to me that pard is marked at trick 1 with a stiff heart and that Waldemar thus had 5. At this point, to ensure down 2, I had to lead the queen of hearts and give pard his ruff (yes, Waldemar raised himself to 4 after overcalling on a 4 bagger.)
Double dummy defense (and +800 for the good guys) would have meant partner drawing trumps (I think he should probably find that play, but he can write his own blog

) instead of playing for the ruff. But instead of taking partner off the hot seat, I continued with a low club, Pierre-Yves continued clubs, and we settled for down 1 and 4 only IMPs.
